Ironwood Resource Advisors LLC Announces Federal Approval of the Largest Tidal Wetland Mitigation Project in Texas History
Spanning more than 2,600 acres of freshwater emergent and estuarine wetland communities, Frentress-Johnson West Bay Mitigation Bank (FJWB) represents a transformative ecological restoration initiative near West Galveston Bay. The mitigation credits generated through restoration of previously degraded habitat will offset unavoidable impacts to local wetlands incurred from development projects in the Greater Houston area including Freeport, Galveston, and Baytown.
These credits streamline environmental permitting by offering pre-approved compensatory mitigation through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Strategically located in Brazoria County just 45 minutes from downtown Houston and 20 minutes from Galveston Island, the region is high value for industrial, transportation, marine, and commercial development with scarce available greenspace. Frentress-Johnson supports vibrant economic growth while permanently protecting wetlands habitat critical to the Texas Gulf Coast and storm protection.
These protected lands represent one of the largest privately-owned contiguous tracts of conserved land on the Texas Coast.
Collaboration with stakeholders and diverse partnerships ensure the land conservation goals at Frentress-Johnson are best suited to meet regional community needs. The project requires periodic interaction with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation and Galveston Bay Foundation, and ongoing compliance with the US Army Corps, EPA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
